India is strengthening its economic ties with Latin America, having recently completed key rounds of trade discussions with Peru and Chile to extend its influence in the area.
The 9th Round of India-Peru Trade Agreement negotiations took place in Lima, Peru, from November 3rd to 5th, 2025. Significant progress has been achieved in several crucial areas, including Trade in Goods and Services, Rules of Origin, Technical Barriers to Trade, Customs Procedures, Dispute Settlement, and crucial Minerals.
High-ranking officials attended the closing ceremony, including H.E. Ms Teresa Stella Mera Gómez, Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, and the Indian team led by Chief Negotiator and Joint Secretary Shri Vimal Anand. According to Minister Gómez, Peru is dedicated to completing the agreement on time, which will increase trade and investment given the complementarities between the two economies.
The Ambassador of India to Peru, H.E. Shri Vishvas Vidu Sapkal, emphasised India’s robust growth and the agreement’s potential to open up new channels for cooperation in vital minerals, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, textiles and food processing, among other areas. Both parties agreed to hold intersessional discussions to resolve outstanding concerns before the next round, which is provisionally set for New Delhi in January 2026.
The third round of the India-Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations, which took place in Santiago, Chile, from October 27th to October 30th, 2025, covered a wide range of topics, including trade in goods and services, investment promotion, rules of origin, intellectual property rights, TBT/sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures, economic cooperation, and critical minerals.
India and Chile reiterated their commitment to completing the CEPA as soon as possible and on time. The final deal is anticipated to boost market access, strengthen supply chains and deepen economic integration between the two countries.
India’s increased engagement with Peru and Chile reflects a strategic aim of developing deeper and mutually beneficial commercial ties in the Latin American region.
