Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to deliver anymore “good days” to aspirational voters.

With final counting for some seats in the key battleground state of West Bengal still ongoing, it has become apparent that the Trinamool Congress party (TMC), led by the incumbent chief minister Mamata Banerjee, has defeated the BJP once again. According to election commission officials, the TMC won a two-thirds majority, claiming 200 seats in the 294-seat state assembly, paving the way for Banerjee to become the chief of West Bengal for the third consecutive time.

In the days leading up to the second wave of COVID-19, PM Modi and his colleagues conducted aggressive campaigns in five state elections, which attracted hundreds of thousands of mask-less supporters for election rallies. Many believe that this, along with crowded festivals and religious gathers, have contributed to the record resurgence of virus infections, with cases having soared 13-fold in barely two months.

Despite the defeat, the BJP managed make substantial gains, being elected as the main opposition party in West Bengal, having claimed nearly 80 seats, in stark contrast to just 3 seats won in 2016. Moreover, the Party managed to retain political power in Assam state, although it was defeated by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu.

In Kerala state, Left Democratic Front (LDF) is set to form a government, while the BJP led alliance failed to claim any seats in the state assembly. So far, the All India NR Congress-led alliance is leading in the union territory of Puducherry, having won 14 of 30 seats.
