King Charles addressed the United States Congress in Washington, DC, in a major diplomatic speech. He spoke about the importance of the close relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States. He described this partnership as “indispensable” and said it is more important than ever in today’s world, especially in addressing global challenges such as climate change, security threats, and economic cooperation.

The speech took place inside the Capitol building. Many US lawmakers were present. The atmosphere was highly supportive. Applause interrupted the king multiple times. In total, he received around twelve standing ovations. This showed strong approval from the audience even before and during his speech. King Charles warned that the world is becoming more unstable and dangerous. He said countries like the UK and US must stay united. He mentioned ongoing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East.

He said these events create serious global challenges. A key message of his speech was support for NATO. He stressed that the alliance is important for protecting both North America and Europe. He also spoke strongly in support of Ukraine and its people during the war. He said democratic nations must continue to stand together against common threats.

The monarch also referred to defence spending. He said the UK has increased its military budget significantly. He described it as the biggest long-term increase in defence spending since the Cold War. He likely aimed this point at demonstrating his commitment to shared security goals. Although the speech was mostly diplomatic, it carried serious political meaning. It came during a period of tension between the UK and the US over several global issues, including defence and foreign policy. The King’s message emphasised the importance of rebuilding trust and strengthening cooperation. He also spoke about unity between people of different religions.

He said understanding between faiths can help build respect and peace. This message came at a time of global uncertainty and conflict, particularly regarding tensions in the Middle East and the rise of extremist groups that threaten interfaith harmony. In a later state dinner at the White House, US President Donald Trump commented on Iran’s nuclear programme. He suggested that King Charles agree with his position, although the UK and US have previously had differences on the issue. Buckingham Palace did not respond to these remarks. The visit also took place during difficult personal circumstances for the royal family. There has been public controversy involving Prince Andrew.

There have been calls for the King and Queen for meetings with victims connected to the Epstein case. However, these meetings did not take place due to legal concerns, which included potential implications for ongoing investigations and the sensitivity surrounding the allegations against Epstein and his associates. In his speech, the King made general reference to victims of abuse and suffering in society. He did not mention any specific case. He also spoke about violence, referring to a recent attack in Washington, DC. He said such acts of violence will not succeed in breaking peace and unity.

The visit was carefully managed with high security. The King and Queen attended official events in a controlled environment. There was no public access during key parts of the visit. During the state dinner, the King gave President Trump a symbolic gift. It was a bell from a wartime submarine. The submarine was humorously named HMS Trump. The King joked that it could be used to “ring” the UK if needed.

It has been 35 years since the last time a monarch delivered such a speech to both houses of Congress, when the king’s mother, Queen Elizabeth II, visited. The visit of King Charles was considered a positive moment in UK-US relations. Despite past tensions, both sides presented a friendly image. The speeches were well received, and the strong public reactions suggested improved diplomatic feelings. The King’s main message was clear. He called for reconciliation, renewed cooperation, and a stronger partnership between the two nations.
