Maldives steals the spotlight with the world’s top Green Destination Award!

Maldives (Commonwealth Union)_ The Maldives has earned the distinguished title of World’s Leading Green Destination at the 2024 World Travel Awards, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s sustainability efforts. This prestigious recognition highlights the Maldivian government’s dedication to preserving the environment while promoting responsible tourism. Competing against other eco-conscious destinations such as Chile, Madagascar, Norway, and Peru, this award is the first of its kind for the Maldives, reinforcing its global position as a leader in sustainable development.

The award reflects the Maldives’ ongoing commitment to transitioning toward a greener future. The government has set an ambitious target to generate 33 percent of the nation’s energy from renewable sources by 2028. Vaavu Rakeedhoo’s successful solar integration initiative, which replaces diesel generators with solar power for up to 22 hours daily, serves as a model for similar projects nationwide. These efforts have significantly reduced the reliance on diesel and contributed to lower emissions, showcasing the potential of renewable energy to transform the nation’s energy landscape.
