Australia (Commonwealth Union) – The holographic image of Tupac created much of the heightened fascination both among Tupac fans and non-fans alike, with the possibility of more artists who have passed away reappearing in holograms. A new research center hopes to take holographic technology to the next level with a key focus on optical technologies that form lifelike moving holograms which can be projected from a phone screen will see its official launch at the Australian National University (ANU).

The Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS) collaborated top minds of 5 Australian universities with 20 partner organizations into a research consortium whose goal is to change the way we implement light. Together with holographic phone screens, this future technology may make self-driving vehicles a reality and permit doctors to get real-time images from within patients at a cellular level.

TMOS Director and Professor in Physics at ANU Dragomir Neshev stated that the lens-based optics that are implemented in current devices are based on concepts of light dating back 3000 years. Professor Neshev also stated that it’s the reason our phone is as thick as it is where traditional lenses have to be a certain width to function and also stated their producing optical surfaces that replace large lenses, which will be a gamechanger for almost every industry.

“Australia’s future prosperity and wellbeing relies on undertaking the fundamental research required to transform the industries of the future. Integrating and advancing our knowledge of light and its interaction with materials at the nanoscale is a tremendously exciting new field,” said Ed Husic, the Minister for Industry and Science. “I’m keen to see how the new ARC Centre TMOS will deepen our knowledge of this growing area of science pioneered in Australia that promises to have significant impact on our future way of life” he added.
