Over 150 Killed in Sectarian Clashes in Pakistan’s Kurram

Recent clashes between Sunni and Shia Muslims in northern Pakistan have resulted in the displacement of over 300 families and the loss of over 150 lives, marking a sharp escalation of sectarian violence. The conflict, unfolding in the scenic yet volatile Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has sparked widespread alarm as sectarian tensions escalate. The violence began on November 21 when two Shia Muslim convoys, escorted by police, were suddenly attacked in Bagan town. The attack left at least 45 people dead and set off a chain of revengeful clashes that claimed dozens more lives over the following days. Fighting intensified across the region, resulting in at least 82 confirmed deaths and 156 severe injuries by the weekend.

Kurram, situated along Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan, has long been a hotspot of sectarian strife. With a unique demographic split, the district is home to both Sunni and Shia communities, with the latter making up around 45 percent of the population, particularly in Upper Kurram. The region’s diverse ethnic makeup, including Sunni tribes and Shia tribes such as the Turi and Bangash, has historically fueled tensions over land and governance. A long-standing rivalry between the Sunni and Shia tribes over agricultural land is the root of the ongoing violence. A dispute in Boshehra village, where Sunni farmers refused to vacate Shia Malekhel tribe-owned leased land, sparked the recent unrest. The conflict over land rights has escalated into deadly clashes, exacerbating already fragile inter-tribal relationships.

The fighting in Kurram is not a new phenomenon. Historical grievances dating back to the colonial era continue to drive the violence in Kurram. Notably, between 2007 and 2011, the district witnessed catastrophic bloodshed, with over 2,000 lives lost and thousands displaced. Despite hopes for stability following Kurram’s 2018 merger into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the region continues to face governance challenges and deep-rooted sectarian enmities. Kurram’s mountainous terrain, rich with groves and orchards, offers both beauty and strategic importance, making it a critical area for external influences.

The proximity to Afghanistan has also brought in cross-border terrorist activities, further complicating the situation. Armed groups often exploit sectarian divisions to exacerbate local conflicts, even though no group has claimed responsibility for the recent attacks. Furthermore, the violence has sparked international condemnation, with Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, the supreme Shia religious authority, calling on the Pakistani government to take immediate action. The international Shia community has also voiced outrage, labeling the violence as an ongoing campaign of ethnic cleansing against Shia Muslims in the region. As calls for action grow, the future of Kurram remains uncertain, as peace remains elusive in a district long haunted by sectarian conflict.
