The welcoming ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, as well as other cabinet ministers and foreign diplomats. The core of PM Luxon’s visit to Malaysia to discuss strategic partnership will be a bilateral meeting with Malaysia’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. This official meeting, scheduled for September 2 at the Perdana Putra Complex in Putrajaya, is expected to focus on deepening the collaboration under the Malaysia-New Zealand Strategic Partnership. This partnership, inaugurated in 2023, is built upon four main pillars: prosperity, people, planet, and peace and security.

During their discussions, both leaders are anticipated to explore opportunities for cooperation and address mutual interests in regional and global contexts. The agenda also includes a joint press conference where a joint statement will be issued to summarize the outcomes of their talks. In addition to his meeting with PM Anwar, PM Luxon will also be meeting Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. These talks will likely touch on energy strategies and water management, areas critical to Malaysia’s ongoing development and transformation.
The visit also highlights the expanding defense cooperation between the two nations. Accordingly, New Zealand has announced the deployment of its P8 Poseidon patrol and reconnaissance aircraft to Butterworth, Penang, for a joint exercise with Malaysia. This move is part of a broader effort to enhance security and defense collaboration within the region. Furthermore, in their joint press conference, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to addressing global challenges, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Accordingly, they called for an immediate ceasefire and emphasized the need for renewed efforts towards a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. Prime Minister Luxon and PM Anwar expressed concern over the current lack of progress and urged stronger international engagement, particularly from influential nations like the United States.

As both countries look towards a future of enhanced collaboration, this visit underscores the importance of their strategic alliance in navigating regional and global challenges. Total trade between the two countries amounted to RM11.56 billion, with New Zealand being Malaysia’s 22nd largest export destination and 27th largest source of imports among Oceania countries.
