Renewable energy will shape the Maldives’ future: President Muizzu

Maldives (Commonwealth Union)_ According to Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the future trajectory of the Maldives will be distinctly shaped by renewable energy. The president made these remarks during a press briefing regarding his inaugural official visits to Turkey and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since taking office on November 17. President Muizzu highlighted the pivotal role renewable energy will play under the current government’s leadership.

With unwavering confidence in the realization of this objective, the president stressed the imperative of transitioning to a sustainable energy system as a foundation for achieving enduring development. President Muizzu, addressing the press, unveiled two significant decisions made by his administration during the COP28 conference. Firstly, he underscored the government’s commitment to the development of renewable energy systems capable of meeting 33 percent of the nation’s electrical needs over the next five years.

Secondly, he announced a national initiative to plant five million trees across the Maldives’ myriad islands, reinforcing the country’s aspiration to evolve into a nation centered on sustainable energy with a green and clean environment. In a strategic move aimed at fiscal prudence, President Muizzu pointed out that allocating USD 750 million annually from the state budget was an unsustainable trajectory. He expressed optimism about attracting foreign investments, citing productive meetings during his visit to Turkey.  

Furthermore, he emphasized that the benefits of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) are open to all interested parties. President Muizzu affirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to providing opportunities, particularly in sectors related to sustainable energy and climate adaptation investments. During the press briefing, key highlights from President Muizzu’s visits to Turkey and the UAE were elucidated, signaling a resolute commitment to steering the Maldives towards a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
