The African fashion scene shining at Lagos fashion week

NIGERIA (Commonwealth Union) – Let’s talk about the African fashion scene. Unlike most fashion capitols, the African scene is totally different. The reason almost every African designer stays true to their culture and their roots.

It was 12 years ago that Lagos started their own fashion week and from the first to the most recent, the clothes have been absolutely stunning, yet also true to their culture. Lagos fashion week was a hit. The lineup was incredible and the international media was mesmerized with what they saw.

The colours, the bold prints, the way everything blended together against the glowing skins of the models that walked the runway and the sway of the soft fabrics, it all made sense beautifully.

Even after 12 years of this untouched and unadulterated raw beauty of the African fashion week, it is still not as recognised in the large scale like its counterparts such as Paris, Milan or London. Nevertheless, this is expected to change soon as the world is taking notice.

It was a 2-day even for the local designers (not only Nigerian but African designers), who came to showcase the beauty that is their creativity. There were almost 4000 spectators, local and international, who watched memorized by the beauty they saw.

The thing about African fashion is that it is not subtle. It is bold and vibrant and it is complementing to the African locals who know how to wear it. It takes time to understand this kind of fabric and the designers who have emerged have studied this culture, which is also their culture since birth, to come and make these stunning clothes.

One can only truly hope that when the time comes that African fashion will truly take over the fashion scene and make it a more colorful and bolder place to live in.
