(Commonwealth)_ The Commonwealth Observer Group (COG) has commended the peaceful and orderly conduct of Gabon’s presidential election held on April 12, while encouraging broader citizen involvement in the country’s democratic process. The interim statement released by the group praised the calm atmosphere of the vote and emphasized the importance of civic participation to strengthen Gabon’s electoral system.

The Observer Group, led by the former President of Seychelles, HE Danny Faure, presented its preliminary assessment during a press conference in Libreville. The group acknowledged that the election was conducted transparently in line with Gabon’s existing legislative framework and allowed citizens to freely exercise their democratic rights. According to the COG, the overall environment on election day reflected the maturity of Gabon’s political process and the growing commitment of its citizens to democratic governance.

While noting the successes of the electoral process, the Observer Group also highlighted areas where further improvement is needed. A key recommendation was the promotion of greater civic engagement in future elections. The group stressed that fostering such engagement would help citizens make better-informed decisions and contribute more effectively to democratic processes. Extending the allocated time for public awareness campaigns on voting rights and civic responsibilities could achieve this. Ensuring citizens are aware of their constitutional right to vote and the importance of their participation would likely enhance the inclusiveness and integrity of future elections.

Another important observation made by the COG pertained to the media landscape in Gabon. The group acknowledged progress in media freedom, noting reduced state interference in editorial content. However, it emphasized the need for equitable access to media platforms for all political candidates. Specifically, it recommended the enforcement of rules that guarantee equal airtime for all parties, particularly on state-owned media outlets. Such measures are considered essential to ensure a level playing field and uphold democratic principles of fairness and transparency.

Regarding the vote-counting process, the COG expressed concern over the early release of projected voter turnout and participation statistics. The group cautioned against the premature dissemination of such figures before final verification, warning that this could lead to public confusion or diminish confidence in the electoral process. Transparency and accuracy in reporting election outcomes are crucial to maintaining trust among voters and stakeholders.

The Observer Group also proposed that Gabon undertake a thorough post-election analysis. It recommended establishing a localized mechanism to review all recommendations put forth by both domestic and international observer missions. This step, the group suggested, would be beneficial as the country prepares for its upcoming legislative and municipal elections. A collaborative and reflective approach would help Gabon further strengthen its democratic institutions and address any remaining gaps in the electoral process.

Before concluding its mission, the Commonwealth Observer Group plans to compile a final report outlining its comprehensive findings and recommendations. This report will be submitted to the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, and shared with the Government of Gabon, the Ministry of Interior, and other key stakeholders, including the general public. The final assessment will serve as an independent review of the entire electoral process and is expected to guide future electoral reforms in Gabon.

The Observer Group’s interim assessment reflects a positive view of Gabon’s progress toward transparent and participatory elections while also underscoring the need for ongoing efforts to promote civic education, equitable media access, and procedural transparency in the country’s democratic journey.
