In 2011, the auction hammer struck a winning bid of nearly $126,000 for the dress once worn by the Princess of Wales.

Netflix’s “The Crown” has unveiled a sneak peek into its depiction of Kate Middleton’s infamous see-through dress, showcased at a 2002 charity fashion show, capturing Prince William’s attention for the first time.

The prospective Princess of Wales boldly presented this daring ensemble on the St. Andrew’s University runway in Scotland, where she and William embarked on their academic journey as first-year students, with the prince sitting front and center.

As the eagerly awaited Season 6 part 2 of “The Crown” approaches its December 14 premiere, Netflix tantalized fans with a glimpse of actress Meg Bellamy donning the iconic dress, while Ed McVey takes on the role of William in the series.

Kate Middleton originally wore this sheer creation over a turquoise-and-black tube top, complemented by black bottoms. The designer, fellow student Charlotte Todd, expressed her joy at how this moment in the royal love story has been immortalized, revealing that she had no prior knowledge of Kate Middleton and didn’t specifically design the dress for her—it was purely coincidental.

The dress, an assignment based on the theme “The Art of Seduction,” made a significant impact on the romance between William and Kate, according to popular belief surrounding their relationship’s early days.

Following their 2011 grand ceremony at Westminster Abbey, where they exchanged vows, William and Kate have since become parents to three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Kate’s fashion sense underwent a transformation post-royal status, shifting towards sophistication and conservatism, abandoning the daring see-through styles. Her wardrobe featured stunning dresses, along with accessible high street looks from brands like Zara and GAP. More recently, the future queen has embraced power suits, signaling her professional approach to her role as the Princess of Wales.

The iconic sheer dress, once worn by Kate, fetched an impressive sum of nearly $126,000 at a 2011 auction. Royal historian Jessica Storoschuk notes that as Catherine establishes herself in her role as Princess of Wales, her wardrobe choices, including the shift to trouser suits, reflect a professional demeanor within the royal family.

As William assumes the position as the next in line for the throne, Middleton is destined to become queen consort when William eventually ascends. This transition follows the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022 after an impressive reign spanning 70 years.
