This Indian designer’s sustainable apparels are gaining global attention

 one-of-a-kind, similar to her ecological apparel and tie-dye process. The company is called Abacaxi, named after the Portuguese word for pineapple, as it “hybridizes a tropical spirit with a New York City lifestyle.” According to her website, Sood’s heritage, as well as her extensive experience working with high-profile companies like Tracy Reese, Cole Haan, and Anthropologie, had a huge impact in the designs of her brand. However, the adventurous designer drew inspiration from her various travels as well.

According to Sood’s website, her passion for adventure has taken her to destinations including Brazil, Indonesia, Vietnam, Peru, and Mexico. She wrote, “While I grew up in Minnesota, we travelled back to India every few years to see family. There I first experienced daily life in saturated color. Those childhood visits sparked an ongoing obsession with travel, textiles, color, and pattern. I explored, studied what I’m most passionate about, and amassed an array of knowledge on indigenous textiles. That knowledge of technique is embedded into my design ethos”.

Sood graduated from Brown University with a visual art degree and worked as a freelance textile design consultant in Brooklyn, where she created Abacaxi with silk clothing that had vintage embroideries.
