President-elect Donald Trump announced the appointment of billionaire Elon Musk and biotech investor Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a new “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) following his victory in the 2024 Presidential Election. Despite not yet becoming an official government entity, the department aims to provide external advice on restructuring federal bureaucracy, eliminating regulatory waste, and streamlining operations.
Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla and a vocal Trump supporter, has committed over $100 million to a pro-Trump superPAC and has reportedly advocated for significant government spending cuts, proposing a 30% reduction in the federal budget. This advisory initiative, nicknamed DOGE—an apparent nod to Musk’s favored cryptocurrency, Dogecoin—aims to tackle inefficiencies and overhaul the federal administrative structure. Ramaswamy, who ran as a Republican presidential candidate earlier this year, will work alongside Musk, aligning with his previous calls for deep cuts to the federal workforce and even the elimination of major federal agencies.
Several of Trump’s other appointments include several high-profile supporters, with Fox News host Pete Hegseth selected as Secretary of Defense, former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe as CIA Director, and Rep. Elise Stefanik as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Governor Doug Burgum, a candidate for Energy Secretary, round out the administration.
The DOGE initiative reflects Trump’s broader agenda of dismantling entrenched government bureaucracy, with Musk and Ramaswamy seen as instrumental in advancing these goals. In a statement following Trump’s announcement, Musk emphasized that the project would “send shockwaves through the system” and hold those responsible for government waste accountable. Ramaswamy echoed this commitment, vowing “we will not go gently,” and highlighted a shared vision of a leaner, more efficient government structure. The pair aims to collaborate and deliver their reforms by July 4, 2026—marking a symbolic 250th anniversary of American independence and, in Trump’s words, a “perfect gift to America.”
