UK (commonwealth) _ According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of cars produced in the UK decreased by 14.4% in July.
Data showed that 65,478 cars were made throughout the month, with model changes and short-term supply chain issues mostly to blame for the production drop. While the output of electric vehicles decreased by 18.6%, the market share was steady at 37.5%, down from 39.5% in the same month the previous year.
Although overall export volumes decreased by 16.3%, the amount of vehicles manufactured for the domestic market saw a 5.1% decrease in production, accounting for 80.9% of all cars produced in July. As of now, export volumes have decreased by 14.3%, but domestic output has increased by 14.8%.
“Some readjustment in output was to be expected following significant growth last year,” stated Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT. Indeed, as the industry reorganizes to shift to the manufacturing of zero-emission vehicles, there will probably be some degree of instability going forward.
“Volume growth will continue as soon as the billions already invested in new models begin to yield returns, assuming we take advantage of every chance to improve our competitiveness globally.
“To ensure that automobiles continue to be a major driver of economic growth, we need to invest in skills, healthy markets, more affordable green energy, and fair trade agreements that make it easier for British-built vehicles to reach international customers.”
