Australia (Common Wealth) _ The UK government highlighted several telecoms initiatives as it pushed forward with a satellite broadband proposal in Scotland and inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Australia on open RAN.

The government stated in a news release issued to coincide with the commencement of London Tech Week that its strategies reflect the UK’s efforts to establish itself as a leader in the sector.

To begin, it emphasized plans announced in April to provide high-speed satellite broadband in Papa Stour Island, one of the UK’s most remote villages. The satellite connectivity will be provided by Clarus Networks Group and OneWeb.

“Improving Papa Stour’s connectivity is a major milestone in our efforts to close the digital divide as it transforms the lives of the island’s residents and visitors,” said John Whittingdale, the UK minister for data and digital infrastructure.

The satellite launch is part of a “package” that also includes the installation of smart lampposts in the neighborhood.

This, according to the government, will help unlock the full potential of 5G and other technologies for infrastructure modernization.

Smart lampposts, sometimes known as “multi-purpose columns,” will help to improve mobile networks, public Wi-Fi, EV charging, safety, and environmental monitoring. According to the government, investing in the gadgets will assist authorities decrease expenses and expand network coverage.

The concept builds on a newly revealed wireless infrastructure strategy.

Whittingdale also announced an MoU with Australia to strengthen the two countries’ current collaboration and to diversify telecoms, with the goal of luring new market participants to minimize “global reliance” on a few manufacturers delivering 5G and other equipment.

The countries would collaborate on open RAN to foster interoperability and “much more vendor diversity in the telecoms ecosystem” under the terms of the MoU.

Previously, during the International Astronautical Congress in Bremen, Germany, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed, providing a framework for cooperation efforts and the sharing of information, technology, and personnel between both nations.
