Vanuatu Officially Eliminates the World’s Leading Cause of Preventable Blindness

trachoma, a neglected tropical illness. The eyelids turn inward, forcing the eyelashes to painfully lacerate, and eventually cloud, the clear covering of the eye, if the initial bacterial infection is not treated quickly enough.

The country’s efforts to eradicate the disease through widespread drug administration, surgical outreach, health education, and environmental risk reduction, according to anuatu’s Minister for Health Bruno Leingkone, have already prevented hundreds of individuals from going blind for the rest of their lives. He continued by saying that people who are born in remote or underprivileged areas will benefit for many years to come.

“This is a proud moment for Vanuatu,” Leingkone said in a statement.

It has been just over 25 years since the WHO created an alliance to eradicate the illness by 2020 and nearly three decades after the organization adopted its official worldwide plan for stopping trachoma. By 2030, trachoma and 20 other neglected tropical illnesses are to be completely eradicated worldwide, according to an updated WHO road map.

In 44 nations, trachoma is still a public health issue. It causes blindness or visual impairment in roughly 1.9 million individuals, and up until 2014, it was present in 12% of all Vanuatuan children between the ages of 1 and 9.

While most young children can recover from a single episode of the infection, the likelihood that the body will be able to rid itself of the germs with each re-acquisition decreases throughout time. Reinfection is frequent if there is poor hygiene, crowded housing, and little access to water.
