Victoria Tops Australian Economic Rankings

-

Australia (Commonwealth)_In a significant turn of events, Victoria has claimed the top spot as the best-performing economy in Australia for the first time in over a year, as revealed in the latest CommSec State of the States report by CBA. This remarkable rise comes after Victoria was ranked fifth in the previous survey conducted in July. The surge in Victoria’s economic standing can be attributed to a confluence of factors, including robust economic activity, a surge in retail spending, heightened business investments, and its highest population growth in nearly seven years.

The top six economies in the country are closely aligned in their economic performance. South Australia has secured the second position, followed by New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

The CommSec State of the States report, a quarterly assessment of economic performance, meticulously evaluates each state and territory by comparing key indicators such as economic growth, retail spending, equipment investment, unemployment, construction, population growth, housing finance, and dwelling commencements.

Furthermore, the report places additional emphasis on annual growth rates for these eight indicators, underscoring the economic momentum and indicating the potential for Australia’s economies to ascend in the economic performance rankings in the forthcoming surveys.

According to Craig James, Chief Economist at CommSec, Victoria demonstrated improvements in its ranking across four of the eight indicators. “Economic activity in Victoria in the June quarter was 7.7% above its four-year average level of output, and equipment investment was at record highs as well – up 19.7% on the decade average,” James stated in a media release.

While Victoria’s ascent from fifth to first place is indeed surprising, it was anticipated that there would be minimal differentiation in the economic performance of the states and territories in this quarter. James also noted that Victoria may face challenges from other economies in the period ahead.

The report also spotlighted Western Australia’s formidable economic momentum, leading in annual growth rates among the other states and territories. This dynamic landscape in Australia’s economic performance sets the stage for heightened competition and potential shifts in rankings in the forthcoming assessments.
