Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – Climate Change and Rural Affairs Secretary Huw Irranca-Davies has recently confirmed a new timeframe for introducing the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS).
The Basic Payment Scheme is confirmed to be available in 2025, with the proposed transition period for the Sustainable Farming Scheme beginning in 2026. Rural Affairs Secretary Huw Irranca-Davies indicated that they have consistently maintained that the Scheme would only be introduced when fully prepared, and promised to uphold that commitment.
During a press conference held at Sealands Farm in Bridgend, the Cabinet Secretary stated that the adjustment of schedules was a reflection of his ‘dedication to meaningful dialogue with the farming community’.
The Welsh cabinet secretary indicated that from the very first day in this role, he has been actively meeting and listening to the farmers, hearing their perspectives, and considering their feedback.
He stated that his dedication to meaningful engagement with the farming sector, Plaid Cymru colleagues under the Cooperation Agreement, and other stakeholders regarding necessary changes will require an adjustment to the implementation timeline.
He also stated that he has consistently maintained that the Scheme will only be introduced when it is fully prepared, and he remains committed to that promise.
He subsequently affirmed that the Basic Payment Scheme would remain accessible in 2025, with the planned transition to the Sustainable Farming Scheme beginning in 2026, and an announcement regarding the BPS cap to follow.
Current rural investment programs, like the small grants schemes, will remain in place to aid infrastructure improvements.
The Welsh Government will also develop a new landscape-scale initiative, drawing from the experiences of earlier collaborative schemes.
This revised timeline will allow for the thorough examination of several critical elements.
“Together we can create a future where our farmers produce the very best of Welsh food to the highest standards, while safeguarding our precious environment,” said the Cabinet Secretary. “We are listening and will continue to listen.”
