Europe UK CU- As Liz Truss takes on the role as Britain’s 56th Prime Minister and the 3rd female prime minister, she faces series of challenges with rising inflation and soaring energy prices following the pandemic. Truss has been credited with one of the most diverse cabinets in Britain’s history. Here some members of the newly appointed cabinet.
Kwasi Kwarteng
Kwarteng was appointed chancellor of the Exchequer. Kwarteng has Ghanian roots and recently served as Secretary of State at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
Thérèse Coffey
Coffey was appointed Health Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister and has previously served as Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions. She is seen to be well qualified for the position with a PhD in Chemistry and years of experience in government.
James Cleverly
Cleverly was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs. He has previously served in the army and was recently Secretary of State for Education.
Suella Braverman
Braverman was appointed Secretary of State for the Home Department, who has previously served as the Attorney General for England and Wales.
Wendy Morton
Morton was appointed MP Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury – Chief Whip. She previously served as Minister of State in the Department for Transport.
Ben Wallace
Wallace MP was re-appointed Secretary of State for Defense and has stated his firm belief in small government and was elected to Scottish Parliament back in 1999.
Brandon Lewis
Lewis CBE MP was appointed Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice. He was initially elected a MP for Great Yarmouth back in May 2010.
Nadhim Zahawi
Zahawi MP was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Minister for Intergovernmental Relations and Minister for Equalities. He took over post of chancellor From Rishi Sunak for one of the shortest periods and arrived in Britain as a refugee from Iraq at a younger age.
Ranil Jayawardena
Jayawardena MP was appointed Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. He is the 1st Sri Lankan origin cabinet minister and commenced his political journey as a Councilor in Hampshire where he initially faced racism from a Robert Blay, a UKIP candidate who threatened to kill him if Jayawardena ever became Prime Minister. UKIP promptly dismissed Robert Blay on learning of the comments.
