Why ‘lonely’ is the most difficult word for UK students

Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – As students gear up for the excitement of freshers’ week, recent research commissioned by the Government has unveiled a striking revelation. Loneliness is a pervasive experience among almost all students, with a staggering 92% acknowledging its presence in their lives. However, what’s even more concerning is that nearly half of them (43%) harbor worries about potential judgment if they were to openly admit to feeling lonely.

Conducted by YouGov, this research has shed light on a troubling trend. A significant majority, 53%, find it more uncomfortable to seek assistance for their loneliness compared to other concerns. This discomfort outweighs worries related to managing finances (49%), tackling course difficulty (49%), securing suitable housing (26%), or even the anxiety of ‘fitting in’ (48%).

Interestingly, the study also unveiled a heartening aspect of human empathy. While students grapple with the fear of judgment, there is, in fact, little judgment directed towards those who courageously acknowledge their loneliness. An impressive 87% of students expressed disagreement with the notion that they would judge someone for sharing such feelings. Furthermore, a substantial 60% indicated their willingness to engage in a conversation with a friend who opens up about experiencing loneliness.

This groundbreaking research coincides with a collaborative effort between the Government and the renowned international restaurant chain, Wingstop. In this partnership, a captivating campaign will be showcased on the chain’s in-store digital screens and social media channels. Its aim is to encourage students to come together during meal times and guide them toward the Better Health – Every Mind Matters website, which offers valuable resources and support for addressing issues related to loneliness and mental health.

Minister for Loneliness, Stuart Andrew says “As these findings make clear, loneliness can affect anyone at any time. While freshers’ week is an exciting time for many, it can often be a daunting prospect for students. Moving away from home and away from friends and family can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation, especially while trying to manage coursework, make new friends and often navigate a new city.”
