Sri Lanka (Commonwealth Union)_ Sri Lanka has been named the World’s Best Island Destination for 2026 by global travel platform Big 7 Travel, earning the top spot in its annual list of “The 50 Best Islands in the World.” The recognition places the Indian Ocean island ahead of many famous destinations known for their natural beauty and tourism appeal. The annual ranking, now in its seventh year, highlights the world’s most attractive island destinations. Big 7 Travel said the list is based on several factors, including previous media coverage, social media popularity, emerging travel trends, and the evaluations of its editorial team.

Sri Lanka secured first place for its diverse landscapes, rich history, and unique travel experiences. The platform praised the island’s 833-mile coastline, scenic central highlands, world-famous tea plantations, delicious cuisine, vibrant cultural heritage, and impressive biodiversity. It also highlighted popular attractions such as Yala National Park, which is well known for its wildlife safaris, and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Sigiriya Rock Fortress, one of the country’s most iconic landmarks. According to Big 7 Travel, Sri Lanka offers a rare combination of beaches, mountains, wildlife, history, and culture, making it a destination that appeals to every type of traveller.

The platform also referred to the famous words of explorer Marco Polo, who once described Sri Lanka as “the finest island of its size in all the world.” Additionally, Mo’orea in French Polynesia ranked second on the list, while Socotra in Yemen took third place. Madeira in Portugal and Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands completed the top five. Europe also performed strongly in the rankings, with destinations such as Milos in Greece, Ischia in Italy, Ibiza in Spain, and Corsica in France all finishing within the top 20. Achill Island in Ireland claimed eighth place, while Scotland’s Isle of Mull was the only island from the United Kingdom to appear in the list, ranking 23rd.

The Top 10 Best Islands in the World for 2026 are: Sri Lanka, Mo’orea (French Polynesia), Socotra (Yemen), Madeira (Portugal), Galápagos Islands (Ecuador), Great Exuma (Bahamas), Seychelles, Achill Island (Ireland), Koh Lipe (Thailand), and Milos (Greece). The latest recognition is expected to further strengthen Sri Lanka’s tourism potential and reputation as one of the world’s leading travel destinations and attract more international visitors in the coming year.
