Tanzania’s 223 billion Cubic Feet of Gas Discovery: Can a Decade-Long Wait Ignite an Energy Revolution?

MTWARA, TANZANIA — 29 OCTOBER 2026

What if a single gas find was capable of powering industries, fuelling cars, making the provision of electricity more reliable and creating new economic prospects? Tanzania is facing this possibility, as it announced its first natural gas find in over ten years.

On 27 October 2026, Tanzania’s Minister of Energy, Juma Zuberi Homera made the revelation that there are 223 billion cubic feet of natural gas at the Kasa-1X ST2 site located in Mnazi Bay Block in the southern region of Mtwara. The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) partnered with the French company Maurel & Prom (M&P) to conduct the exploration. The last time there was a discovery was in 2015.

This announcement is essential, as there is already natural gas in the energy system of Tanzania, which is used for generating electricity as well as households, industries and vehicles. More local production may lead to improvements in the reliability of supply and, at the same time, provide new avenues for businesses that require affordable and reliable energy sources.

However, this headline figure can only be interpreted with an important qualification. In its operational update dated 22 October 2026, Maurel & Prom stated that Kasa-1X had struck a very promising gas reservoir and has estimated its volume at around 200 billion cubic feet gross, of which the company’s share is 120 billion cubic feet, based on its 60% stake in the asset. It did not classify this figure as proved reserves or any other formally designated resource category. Thus, the figure put forth by the government of 223 billion cubic feet has to be taken with a qualification and should not be automatically interpreted as gas that could be commercially recovered.

The production may commence according to the company’s announcement. Kasa’s gas output may begin in November 2026 with almost 50 million cubic feet of estimated gross output. Moreover, the company has reported an overall gas production of about 130 million cubic feet daily from the Mnazi Bay site through wells MB-5 and MS-2 as per its latest announcement made in October.

The positive effects of greater amounts of gas would be much wider than just the electricity supply. The expansion of gas production capacity will pave the way for manufacturing, transport services, the petrochemical industry and fertiliser production, creating working places and new sources of tax income. However, the discovery itself can hardly guarantee lower prices for household services or rapid industrial growth, as these will truly depend on reliable production, infrastructure, investments, and successful delivery of gas to consumers.

As a result, the most recent find made by Tanzania has become more than just a geological landmark – it has given one the chance to turn the hidden resource into tangible value. The key issue now does not merely consist in the amount of gas under the Mnazi Bay area but rather in the potential to create reliable energy and useful industries from it.
