Sri Lanka’s Global Rubber Industries adds agricultural tyre capacity

According to Sri Lanka’s Global Rubber Industries, they panning on making an agricultural tire plant that will have a capacity of producing 750,000 tires annually or 100 tonnes daily which amounts a fourfold increase.

It is reported that GRI founded 40 million dollar factory in 2018. The new out-fit increase the investment up to 100 million dollars.

“GRI’s expansion and increase in our production capacity, in such a short time frame, is a result of the overwhelming demand for ourGRI branded products in recent years,” Managing Director of GRI, Prabhash Subasinghe said.

 “It has been rewarding to see how our products have been so well received in an extremely competitive market…”

The production of agricultural tires together with radial tires will be manufactured at the factory.

The firms Executive Director, Mr. Ananda Caldera indicated that an additional 11,600 square meters will be added to the current plant which will then be a total of 22,400 sq. mtrs.  The plant will be furnished with   22 tire building machines and 36 presses

“Our maximum tire size now is 50 inches,” Caldera said. “We will soon be able to manufacture tires up to 60 inches in size in the new production plant to meet growing market demand and cater to our customer requirements.”

According to the Firms sources, GRI is the sole producer of radial tires. This new development will increase its labor strength to 500 and Mr. Mahesha Ranasoma, the Chief Executive of GRI confirmed that  the additional  employees will be in the production, engineering, quality assurance, advanced technology and development areas.  

The factory roof will have solar panels, taking the generating capacity to 2.5 Mega Watts. The factory also uses biomass boilers instead of furnace oil.

In 2020, GRI also commenced construction of a new mixing facility in the Mirigama Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) in Sri Lanka. The firm which started in 2002, has a presence in 50 countries. (Colombo/Jan24/2021)
