Tennis players are experiencing pressure while playing competitive tennis as they strive for success in their sport. Given this experience, athletes must be able to handle the pressure of competition both on and off the court. When you consider that many of these young athletes have achieved outstanding success so far – including an opportunity to compete for their country in international events – it becomes apparent that some may be able to exceed those expectations due to their previous experience.
The upcoming tournament will offer these young tennis players from Sri Lanka a chance to showcase their talent. With the level of play increased due to pressure and expectation, the tournament will provide upcoming athletes from Sri Lanka an avenue to demonstrate to themselves and to the world what is possible when you combine hard work, determination and perseverance. If they have been successful thus far and have demonstrated that they can compete under this pressure, then the future looks promising for these young athletes.
In the world of junior tennis, certainly no stranger to the spotlight is Damsiluni of Sri Lanka, who was a part of the all-girls doubles partnership with Annaya Norbet and helped them achieve victory over a valiant Philippine team during the finals of the ITF Asia Under 14 Development Championship being held in Colombo, having had the opportunity to have a bout with their counterparts from the Philippines that went the full 3 sets (again showing both the spirit, tenacity, and competitiveness that will be needed from the girls of Sri Lanka at a higher level) and establish a reputation for themselves as being strong competitors. As far as having a strong competitive mindset leading into the year 2026, Damsiluni solidified that type of image at the Yeti-SSC Open Tennis Championship when she competed against her same-gender peers but for an older division. She won the under-16 girls’ singles title at that event, where it was obvious that she had already developed her game beyond her present age and showed tremendous potential moving ahead.
While the achievement(s) of this singular pairing or player are very important events, the greater good of the sport is to establish a pathway of competition for all players at the same level by providing an opportunity to compete with other players of the same age and level through a series of development competitions throughout the Asia region (based on what has qualified each federation’s involvement). As mentioned earlier, the ITF Asia Under 14 Development Championships are the final qualifying event for all Asia region national teams for the International Tennis Federation development series. Additionally, the qualifying events are not only for developing players but also provide an opportunity for developing trainers, coaches, and match officials (officials) with the infrastructure necessary to develop junior players. Examples of different regions that have established frameworks/protocols that will allow national teams to establish qualification criteria include Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. The plethora of competition opportunities now accessible to young players across Asia is truly astounding.
The next hurdle for Sri Lanka is to take their pedigree of success onto the competition court as a point of pressure. The captaincy of Damsiluni in singles is well-earned because he has demonstrated a track record of succeeding when it matters most in previous events where his performance was absolutely critical to winning medals. As a result of his strong performance as captain, Damsiluni will be able to set an example for other members of the team at each of the initial ties. Given the instances where athletes may win or lose medals based on very narrow margins, if Sri Lanka continues to develop its junior athletes both domestically and internationally, the end result will be that not only will individual athletes’ names be effectively showcased on the entry lists, but Sri Lanka will also have produced several elite, bona fide contenders.
