South Africa under pressure to commit to global treaty

PRETORIA (CU)_Amid increasing interest in climate action and sustainable development, the Mail & Guardian exposed last week that South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) intends to vote against a proposed global plastic treaty at a ministerial meeting that it scheduled to be held in September, and that the authorities had arrived at this decision after consulting business interest groups only. According to the new agency, the leaked documents also revealed that the government not only plans to opt out of the treaty, but also intends to capitalise on plastic pollution by importing plastic waste for profit.
