In Australia, solar momentarily surpasses coal as the nation’s top energy source

Australia (Commonwealth Union)_ With the exception of Western Australia and the Northern Territory, all states and territories participate in the energy market, where solar energy has supplanted coal as the primary source of electricity. Although it had happened before, scientists said it was the first time it had under pretty “regular” circumstances. It occurred immediately before the sunniest period of the year and was not brought on by a scarcity of coal-fired electricity.

That made it particularly noteworthy, according to Joshua Stabler of the energy consultancy firm Energy Edge. He said that this was the first time in the history of business as usual that coal had been displaced as the leading fuel source. At times, coal accounted for as much as 80% or 90% of the energy entering the market. This indicates that it is a significant occurrence.

On Friday at noon, solar had a market share of around 40% and coal had a share of about 38% when the milestone was reached. Wind was then the third-largest source of energy, behind gas and hydro. 60% of the market’s energy was delivered overall by renewable sources.

According to energy experts, it is a foreshadowing of things to come. These kind of situations, where coal clearly takes a back seat in the production of energy, according to Mr. Stabler, are likely to occur more frequently, especially at this time of year. He claimed that there was plenty of sunshine and rather warm temperatures. This is merely the beginning of many similar occasions, he noted, adding that “Every type of spring-like period, we get a lot of sunshine and little demand”.

Instead of large-scale solar farms, the majority of the energy was produced by rooftop solar panels that were mounted on buildings like residences and offices. When solar energy is no longer accessible, coal continues to dominate the grid during the evening peak. However, Richie Merzian of the Australia Institute, a progressive think tank, asserted that this could be resolved by altering the whole energy infrastructure. Why are Australia’s largest power companies not profiting from the energy crisis? The major power suppliers in the nation are finding it difficult to compete with record-high energy rates. Who is, then, “making out like a bandit”?
