Vulnerable households in the UK to get government support

Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – The government has stated that vulnerable households will receive assistance with essential costs this winter, as Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall announces the extension of the Household Support Fund for another six months.

The £421 million extension provides assurance to Local Authorities all over England throughout the winter that will continue till April 2025 as they keep the support for those facing challenges with the costs of energy, food, and water.

Pensioners and others who are facing hardship in keeping their homes warm or being unable to afford essential items during the colder months have been asked to reach out to their local council to explore available support. The details regarding the latest scheme for local authorities and councils are set to be shared in the coming weeks.

Many councils also use the Fund for more than just emergency aid, collaborating with local charities and community groups to provide residents with essential appliances, school uniforms, cooking classes, and items to enhance energy efficiency at home.

The government will allocate approximately £79 million to Devolved Administrations through the Barnett formula, demonstrating a comprehensive effort to ensure that every individual across the nation has the necessary foundations for financial stability. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland’s administrations have the autonomy to decide how to distribute these additional funds, while the UK government maintains close collaboration with them to support vulnerable populations.

The government indicated that facing a challenging economic legacy, they were compelled to make tough choices to stabilize our public finances and address the £22 billion deficit.

Since 2010/11, poverty has increased by 1.3 million people, and living standards have declined at the steepest annual rate recorded in 2022/23. For over ten years, individuals have been deprived of the security and dignity that meaningful employment provides, with nearly 2.8 million people unemployed due to illness—approaching a record high.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves MP, says “The £22 billion blackhole inherited from the previous governments means we have to take tough decisions to fix the foundations of our economy.”
