transposition of the great arteries, which is a rare congenital malformation of the heart. In simple terms, the two major arteries exiting the infant’s heart were transposed, or incorrectly attached to the lower chambers of the heart ventricles.

The life-saving treatment, described as an arterial switch operation, is a sophisticated sort of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery that was performed by a team of Nigerian doctors for nearly 19 hours. Only the world’s most talented pediatric surgeons are known to successfully perform the surgery. The medical team that performed the challenging surgery was headed by Professor Kamar Adeleke, a professor of medicine/cardiology, interventional cardiologist, and the Founder/CEO of Tristate Healthcare System, which is a consortium of top-tier superspecialty healthcare providers.

Adeleke, President/CEO of the Tristate Cardiovascular Institute and Chief of Division of Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Laboratory at University College Hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State, expressed optimism over the medical achievement. According to him, arterial switch surgery is an open-heart procedure that is typically performed within the first two weeks of life, otherwise it is too late. He continued that because of the abnormalities, oxygen-rich blood from the infant’s lungs was being pumped back into the lungs, while oxygen-depleted blood was being circulated throughout the body.

Noting that around 0.01 percent of the Nigerian population is affected by congenital cardiac abnormalities, Adeleke stated that the achievement was noteworthy as the disease was being addressed locally for the first time. The intricacy of the surgery was rated at around 9, on a scale of 1 to 10. Therefore, the operation was a tremendous accomplishment.
