Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – Creddy Taylor, a 21-year-old resident of Leeds, participated in a violent burglary that caused severe distress to a pregnant woman. His initial four-year sentence has been doubled to eight years following a review under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.

During the incident on July 25, 2023, a group of masked individuals, one armed with a machete, forcefully entered a residence in Bradford in broad daylight. The pregnant victim managed to escape before Taylor and his accomplices absconded with valuable possessions such as watches, designer goods, and money.

Solicitor General Robert Courts KC MP expressed profound dismay upon learning about the dreadful robbery and offered heartfelt sympathies to the victim who endured such a harrowing ordeal.

“The court’s intervention is a welcome one and this case should send a stark warning that those who commit violent burglaries  will face the full extent of the law for their crimes.”

Creddy Taylor received a four-year prison sentence at Bradford Crown Court on January 12, 2024, following his conviction for aggravated burglary. However, on April 12, 2024, his sentence was extended to eight years after being reviewed under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.

The Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme in the UK allows for certain sentences handed down by the Crown Court to be reviewed if they are deemed excessively lenient. This scheme covers a range of serious offenses, including but not limited to crimes such as murder, rape, robbery, and certain forms of assault.

Members of the public, prosecutors, can request the Attorney General to refer sentences they believe to be unduly lenient to the Court of Appeal for review. If the Court of Appeal agrees that the sentence is unduly lenient, they have the authority to increase it to a more appropriate level. This scheme aims to ensure that sentences for serious crimes are proportionate to the gravity of the offense committed.
