Democratic Leader Makhija on India-US Partnership

(Commonwealth_ India) In a recent interview with PTI, prominent Indian-origin Democratic leader Neil Makhija emphasized the significance of the India-US partnership, describing it as the most important global engagement for the future. Makhija, a close associate of Vice President Kamala Harris and currently serving as Montgomery County Commissioner and Chair of the Board of Elections, articulated that the collaboration between these two nations would flourish further under a Harris presidency.

Makhija noted the geopolitical context in which this partnership operates, particularly highlighting the competitive dynamics with China and the aggressive actions of Russia that conflict with US interests and those of its allies. He stated, “India is truly the most vital country for the US to enhance its relationship with, given its size and economic potential.” He underscored the necessity for the next US president to recognize India as a crucial partner, especially in addressing global challenges such as defense and climate change. The US and India can spearhead the path if they work together, he stated.

As the upcoming presidential election on November 5 approaches, Makhija characterized this moment as pivotal for the United States. He highlighted the contrasting visions represented by the candidates: one advocating for the protection of democracy and fundamental freedoms, and the other seeking to regress to an era before diverse communities contributed to the fabric of American society. “We face a choice: do we embrace a pluralistic, welcoming nation or revert to an exclusive vision that serves a particular demographic?” he posed.

Makhija also pointed to the Republican Party’s stance on immigration, criticizing its failure to support necessary reforms such as increasing the cap on H-1B visas, which disproportionately affects Indian professionals. He recalled that Kamala Harris, during her tenure as a senator, sponsored a bill to address the H-1B backlog. The Republican Party has, however, maintained that it only opposes illegal immigration.

The Indian American community generally votes Democratic; however, in recent years, the Republican Party has been making inroads with the Indian American community and among other minorities, which could play a crucial role in the upcoming US election.
