Environment Canada predicts a “significant spring storm”that will hit southern Saskatchewan

Canada_ (Commonwealth) _ According to a special weather bulletin released by Environment and Climate Change Canada on Monday morning, a “significant spring storm” is expected to arrive on Tuesday. “It’s intended as an early heads up that there’s a big system coming,” meteorologist Kyle Fougere said of the original warning, stressing that the weather alerts were expected to alter swiftly.

And they did change. That statement had been withdrawn by Monday afternoon, leaving Regina and most regions east and south of the city under a winter storm watch. “Our weather guidance is indicating those will be the worst-hit areas the heaviest amounts of snow, the strongest winds, and probably the most impact,” warning preparation meteorologist Terri Lang said after the alerts were revised.

The storm is expected to begin as rain on Tuesday afternoon before transitioning to flurries overnight, according to Fougere. The biggest snowfall is predicted early Wednesday morning, with most southern locations receiving 10 to 25 centimetres. “The system is coming from the north and will push into extreme southeastern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, spreading the snowfall,” Fougere explained.

“It’s a fairly common occurrence in the spring, but this one is quite potent for one of these storms.”

According to Fougere, significant snowfall and severe wind gusts are forecast to make driving conditions hazardous, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday.

“If you have travel plans on those days, reschedule them if possible that would likely be the best scenario.” If you must travel, pay close attention to the rapidly changing conditions,” he urged drivers.

The Colorado low is forecast to leave the province by late Thursday, leaving behind a colder Friday, according to Fougere. Lang stated that much of Saskatchewan should expect a sluggish melt, with temperatures expected to return to average by early next week.
