Sports (Commonwealth Union) _ Sri Lanka’s participation in this year’s Thailand Open Athletics Championship saw remarkable performances by the team’s athletes, who successfully secured a grand total of 11 medals.

Top athletes from across Asia engaged in solid competition at the Championship in Bangkok. However, Sri Lanka left a significant impression through both track and field events, with impressive achievements including six gold medals, four silvers and a bronze.

Vickranaj Vakshan was among the event’s standout performers, dominating the meet. The long-distance runner won a gold medal in the men’s 5,000 meters, drawing to a finish with an impressive 15-second lead over the runner-up and a total timing of 15:04.56.  On the opening day, Vakshan also won a silver medal in the 1,500 meters, and his two medals, along with his consistent performance, have established him as one of Sri Lanka’s biggest potentials in long-distance athletics.

Rusiru Chaturanga, a middle-distance runner, also delivered a top performance. Having swept up the gold medal at the men’s 1,500, Chathuranga followed up his first win with a spectacular win in the men’s 800 metres with a timing of 1:50.01.  His double gold achievement marks him as one of the top athletes competing in the championship for Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, the captain of the Sri Lankan team, Nimali Liyanarachchi, displayed her resilience, clocking in the women’s 800 meters at 2:10.46, sweeping up the gold medal. The victory doubled her medal count, with Liyanarachchi having achieved a silver medal at the women’s 1,500 meters, and it also proved her versatility in performing spectacularly over different distances.

Sri Lanka also took to the podium during field events with yet another set of double golds, as Madushani Herath delivered on-point performances at the women’s long jump and triple jump. Herath achieved personal bests in both events, broadening the scope of Sri Lanka’s championship victory.

Ayomal Akalanka also delivered a stunning performance as a promising short-distance runner. The 19-year-old made his debut at a senior international meet, achieving the silver medal at the men’s 400-metre hurdles event with a time of 50.75 seconds, displaying impressive maturity and composure. Akalanka also took part in the Junior National Championship earlier in the year, where he recorded his personal best with a timing of 50.20 seconds.

Safeen Ahamed also contributed to the accolades gained by field events, leaping over a distance of 15.94 meters to secure a bronze medal in the men’s triple jump.

The Thai Open put a spotlight on Sri Lanka’s athletics game, displaying its strength in both track and field events. The strong, versatile performances put on by the Sri Lankan athletes in Bangkok are a definite confidence boost as the athletes move on to bigger competitions that will be coming up.
