Sri Lanka (Commonwealth Union)_ Popular British actor Jeremy Irons, winner of both Oscar and Emmy awards, landed in Sri Lanka on the night of June 17. He arrived in the island nation to film for a new international project called Cage Bird, which is being directed by well-known Sri Lankan filmmaker Chandran Rutnam. According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, it is the first time in over a decade that a major Hollywood star like Irons has visited Sri Lanka for a movie project.

As Irons arrived, he was greeted by Harendra Wijewardene and Chaminda Munasinghe from the Tourism Promotion Bureau. Irons, who has performed in a number of popular films and shows like The Lion King, Reversal of Fortune, and The Borgias, arrived from Mumbai on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-144. The flight reached Bandaranaike International Airport at around 11 PM. Addressing the reporters, Irons stated that he will be staying in Sri Lanka for two weeks to play the role of an Englishman trying to help a young Sri Lankan girl who is facing difficult challenges.

Jeremy Irons is highly respected for his work both in theater and film. Over the years, he has won many top awards, including an Oscar, a Tony, three Emmys, and two Golden Globes. Only a few actors in the world have earned all three major acting awards—film, TV, and stage—known as the Triple Crown of Acting. Furthermore, he is also famous for lending his voice to the villain Scar in the original The Lion King movie (1994) and for playing Alfred in the DC superhero films between 2016 and 2023. Additionally, his current project Cage Bird is expected to help promote Sri Lanka as an exciting destination for international film projects. Notably, having a well-known actor like Irons involved is a great way to get global attention and boost tourism.

Director Chandran Rutnam, who is leading this new film, has worked with several Hollywood productions in Sri Lanka and Malaysia. He was part of big movies like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and Indochine (1992), which were partly filmed in Sri Lanka. Irons was born on the Isle of Wight in England. He is married to actress Sinéad Cusack and has a son, Max Irons, who is also an actor. He won the Oscar and a Golden Globe for his role in Reversal of Fortune in 1990.
