Chennai (Commonwealth Union)_ Tamil cinema has taken another step onto the global stage, with Vijay Sethupathi’s 2024 crime thriller Maharaja set to receive a Hollywood remake. The development makes it the first Tamil film to be adapted by a major Hollywood studio, marking an important moment for the industry’s growing international presence. Accordingly, the remake plans were confirmed by producer Sudhan Sundaram and the film’s production houses. Speaking to the media, Sundaram said Hollywood interest followed the film’s strong performance in China and on streaming platforms. According to reports, Maharaja earned around ₹91.65 crore at the Chinese box office.

“Following the success of the film in China, we were approached by a Hollywood agency for the remake rights,” Sundaram said. The agency is reportedly working to develop the project around an A-list actor, with production expected to begin next year. The film’s producers also announced the development on social media, calling it a historic achievement for Tamil cinema. The news quickly attracted attention from fans, who praised director Nithilan Saminathan and Vijay Sethupathi for helping the film reach audiences beyond India.
There has also been speculation that Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey could lead the remake. McConaughey, known for films such as Interstellar and Dallas Buyers Club, has not been officially confirmed for the project. Sundaram said the actor could be among those being considered but stressed that the Hollywood agency would have to make any official announcement. Other details, including the studio and final cast, have also not been revealed. Maharaja tells the story of a barber who goes to a police station to report a missing dustbin named Lakshmi. What begins as an unusual complaint gradually develops into a much darker story. The film’s unexpected turns and tightly structured screenplay became major talking points after its release.

The movie also featured Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Natty Subramaniam and Sachana Namidass. Namidass later won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress. Meanwhile, Vijay Sethupathi has confirmed that Maharaja 2 is also in development. He said Saminathan had already narrated the sequel’s story to him and that he was impressed with the idea. The actor has also expressed his willingness to appear in the Hollywood remake without taking a fee.
