Maldives to spearhead new sustainable development plan

The Maldives (Commonwealth Union)_ President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu unveiled an ambitious vision for sustainable development in the Maldives during his attendance at the World Governments Summit 2024. As part of his official visit to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Dr. Muizzu participated in the World Governments Summit 2024 at the invitation of the UAE’s Vice-President, Prime Minister, and Minister for Defense, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The summit took place at Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai from February 12 to 14, focusing on the theme ‘Shaping Future Governments’, with participation from governments, international organizations, thought leaders, and private sector leaders to discuss future challenges and strategies for empowering the next generation of governments. In his keynote address, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu presented a forward-looking vision for the Maldives’ future, emphasizing sustainable development across various economic sectors under the Visitor Economy Concept.

Commending the UAE’s leadership for promoting inclusive governance and partnership, Dr. Muizzu outlined plans to achieve sustainable development, including projects such as the central maritime port with a free zone, the expansion of Velana International Airport, and the integration of maritime development in the northernmost atoll with a global shipping route. Moreover, he underscored the government’s commitment to leveraging technology and artificial intelligence to enhance productivity and facilitate business growth, emphasizing initiatives to promote paperless e-government platforms and integrate AI into various services.

Addressing environmental concerns, President Dr. Muizzu highlighted the launch of the Ras Malé Eco-City project, aimed at improving urban living standards by providing 65,000 housing units and establishing new sustainability benchmarks. He also outlined plans to develop urban centers across the country and reiterated the Maldives’ vulnerability to climate change, emphasizing the need for global action to resolve the climate crisis.

The President commented on the objectives of the administration, which include prioritizing climate resilience, increasing renewable energy to 33 percent, building more biosphere reserves and nature parks, planting five million trees for resilience, practicing vertical farming for food security, and establishing a 20-year development plan. Concluding his remarks, Dr. Muizzu stressed the importance of international cooperation for sustainable development, pledging collaboration and knowledge exchange with other governments. He expressed the Maldives’ eagerness to form partnerships with other nations and work towards shared goals and successes.
