Prison time for water pollution

-

Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – A new law by the UK Government aimed at cracking down on Water bosses responsible for polluting Britain’s rivers, lakes, and seas is being unveiled, marking the biggest elevation for enforcement powers in a decade. The law is set to protect Britain’s rivers and lakes.

The Water (Special Measures) Bill has been presented to parliament, granting regulators stronger and faster tools to hold water companies accountable for environmental damage and service failures.

This legislation came ahead of a speech by Secretary of State Steve Reed at Thames Rowing Club on Thursday, 5th September, where he was to outline his vision for overhauling the water sector to an audience of industry representatives, investors, environmental advocates, and campaigners.

The Bill fulfills manifesto commitments to reform the water industry, giving the Environment Agency expanded powers to file criminal charges against executives of water companies breaking the law. It introduces tougher sanctions, including imprisonment, for executives who obstruct investigations or fail to comply.

Additionally, the legislation will prohibit water company executives from receiving bonuses if they fail to uphold high standards for environmental protection, customer care, and financial management.

Other key provisions include steep, automatic fines for a variety of violations, empowering regulators to impose penalties more swiftly, without the need for lengthy investigations. The Bill also mandates independent monitoring of all sewage outlets, requiring companies to release real-time data on emergency discharges, which must be reported within an hour of the incident.

Environment secretary Steve Reed, Food and Rural Affairs, reflected on the publics outrage indicating that in modern-day Britain, the unprecedented amounts of sewage are being discharged into our rivers, lakes, and seas adding that years of disregard have left our waterways in an unacceptable condition.

He pointed out that it is why he is announcing swift measures to put an end to the disgraceful conduct of water companies and their executives.

“This Bill is a major step forward in our wider reform to fix the broken water system. We will outline further legislation to fundamentally transform how the water industry is run and speed up the delivery of upgrades to our sewage infrastructure to clean up our waterways for good.”
