Trump’s and Biden’s Policies on Immigration

New York , USA (CWBN)_ The two presidential candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden recently shared their views and plans on immigration policy ahead of US election 2020. The two leaders seem to follow different policies regarding immigration. Here are Biden’s future plans and Trump’s current rules on immigration and his future plans.

Biden’s policies on immigration:

Joe Biden’s immigration policies seem to correlate with Obama’ policies. His immigration plans seem to be loyal and give relief to the immigrants as well as to the ones looking for migration. Biden’s immigration plans were highly appreciated by the overseas students and employees and also by the foreigners living in US. Most of Biden’s immigration plans focus on reversing a significant number of current policies of President Trump. He said that he will stop the construction of border wall and fully eliminate the practice of separating immigrant families at the US border. He also said that he will end current bans on people from certain Muslim-majority countries traveling to the US.

Biden said that he would reverse Trump’s restrictions toward granting asylum and temporary protected status and instead he wants to raise the cap on the number of refugees brought into the country to 125,000 per year. Biden promised that he will make the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) permanent on his first day as president. Biden said that he will modernise the country’s immigration infrastructure which would offer a pathway to citizenship for about 11 million undocumented people in the country. Biden said that he wants to make both permanent and temporary work visas more accessible.

Biden has additionally proposed several initiatives through the federal government’s Task Force on New Americans, aiming to support immigrants living in the US. This task force will create local offices of immigrant affairs and informational hubs throughout the country which would provide resources on accessible health care and education systems as well as employment opportunities.

Trump’s plans for immigration:

Trump’s plans for immigration seem to contradict with Biden and Obama’s policies on immigration. Trump’s plans mostly focus on construction of the border wall. It was said that Trump’s second term agenda on immigration will be based on the foundation policies which he set in his first term, mostly construction of the border wall, restricting immigration and opposing so-called sanctuary cities. His campaigns singled out the need to end human trafficking and aimed at removing non-citizen gang members from the country.

Recently, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Trump has imposed many restrictions on legal immigration and international work and study visa to US. He tightened the rules and limited the distribution of visas, arguing that this will benefit American employment. Trump signed an executive order which restricts the entry of skilled foreign workers into the US and also temporarily banned issuing of fresh H-1B and L1 visas till the end of this year. This caused a negative impact on firms in US and also resulted in an estimated loss of USD 100 billion to US companies. This new order has blocked nearly 200,000 foreign workers and their dependents from entering the US.

A news report said that it is plausible that the Trump administration’s measures significantly restraining immigration will have lasting negative impacts on American firms, and with it, slow down the post-COVID-19 economic recovery. The report added that this rule will have negative impacts on American colleges and universities and will also affect the overseas students who are seeking higher education in US. Also, this will have long-lasting impacts on the legal immigration system as well.

Students and exchange visitors

The most affected by this rule will be the students and exchange visitors. They occupy more than 2 million visas. Most of the immigrants are from Asia. China stands leading with 370,000 students, India with 202,000 students and South Korea with 52,000 students. The news says that Trump is planning to nominate immigration hardliner Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court in order to influence immigration policy in the future. Hence, Trump’s new rules on immigration had great impacts on the foreign workers, students and many US companies.

On carefully studying the immigration policies of both the presidential candidates, both seem to contradict to a greater extent in their immigration policies. Biden’s immigration policies aim at removing the restriction rules that Trump had imposed on immigration and he also focus on stopping the construction of Trump’s boarder wall between the US and Mexico. His immigration policies seem to resemble Obama’s policies and primarily focus on providing a road map to citizenship for the people living in US illegally. He also wishes to expand the resources to immigrants living in the US. Bidens immigration plans were appreciated and welcomed by many leaders and common people, and the policies seem loyal and beneficial to many immigrants. Moreover, his support to the immigrant families at the US border secured more attention and was welcomed by many people. It seems that Trump had already set his immigration policies and implementing it now. Trump is expected to continue with his current policies even in the future. He has planned to finish his border wall between US and Mexico and is expected to continue with his current restriction rules imposed on immigration. The research says that his immigration policies in the recent past had only negative impacts.
