Twelve major retailers work together to promote the need for chemically recycled plastic

-

UK (Commonweath Union)_ Twelve of the biggest consumer products firms in the world, including Mars, PepsiCo, Unilever, and Danone, have teamed up to show that there is a sizable and expanding demand from businesses in Europe for chemically recovered plastic. The companies claimed that by 2030, just 40 companies in Europe might have a demand for at least 800,000 tonnes per year of chemically recycled plastic.

The group, which also includes Barilla, Amcor, Colgate-Palmolive, and McCain Foods, stated that they wanted to provide investors and authorities a “strong signal of support” about the need of expanding the infrastructure for plastics recycling. Although chemical recycling technology is not a panacea, the Coalition acknowledges that it will be a significant technological advancement that can be used to recycle inevitable plastic trash that cannot be recycled mechanically. The businesses understand that major investment in garbage collection, sorting, and recycling infrastructure is needed to grow the emerging market for chemicals plastic recycling and lessen the quantity of plastic waste that is transported to landfills and incinerators.

Campaigners worry that chemical recycling, which reduces plastic to its chemical form, has substantial environmental dangers and could generate more emissions than garbage incineration. They have cautioned that due to a dearth of independent reporting and oversight of the experimental facilities that do exist, the industry has overestimated the viability of chemical recycling and undervalued its influence on the environment.

The letter comes shortly after a set of guidelines for chemical recycling, developed by the 40 members of the Consumer Goods Forum’s Coalition of Action on Plastic Waste, was published. The guidelines aim to promote the advancement of new technologies while addressing concerns regarding the environmental impact of the developing industry. The Coalition of Action on Plastic Waste organized the new letter, which also has the signatures of Ferrero, Henkel, Modelez International, and Haleon.
