The selected airports were recognized not only for their visual appeal but also for creating memorable experiences for travellers while reflecting the unique character of their locations. Representing India are Terminal 1 of Navi Mumbai International Airport and Terminal 2 of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. Both facilities are operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited. The judges noted that modern airports are no longer viewed solely as transportation hubs. Today’s travellers expect airports to offer a sense of place and to provide a glimpse into the culture, history, and identity of the region they are visiting.

Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati Terminal 2

Guwahati’s Terminal 2 impressed the jury with its strong connection to northeastern India’s natural and cultural heritage. Inspired by the local flower, the bamboo orchid, the terminal features bamboo-inspired design elements, high ceilings and representations of the flow of the Brahmaputra River. The building draws on local traditions with indigenous art, tribal storytelling and regional crafts. Sustainability measures are also incorporated into indoor gardens and rainwater management systems to reduce its environmental footprint. The design aims to create an inviting space which showcases the biodiversity and cultural diversity of Northeast India.

Navi Mumbai International Airport Terminal 1

Navi Mumbai International Airport’s Terminal 1 stands out for its striking lotus-inspired architecture. The world-famous Zaha Hadid Architects designed the terminal, and one of the key features is the dramatic roof structure which looks like the petals of a blooming lotus flower. The floral theme is also continued inside the building. The airport which was opened in 2025 is the product of a major engineering project involving extensive land development and modifications to the infrastructure. Large windows and advanced building materials let natural sunlight flood the terminal, reducing the need for artificial lighting and improving energy efficiency. Digital art installations and modern technology further enhance the passenger experience.
