Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – Additional funding has been allocated to bolster the availability of cost-effective residences and amenities within isolated and countryside regions.

The collaborative efforts of the Scottish Government and the Nationwide Foundation will infuse financial support into the Communities Housing Trust and South of Scotland Community Housing initiatives, spanning a three-year period. This infusion of resources will serve to materialize projects focused on generating housing options that are economically viable.

Affordable housing has become a distant dream for many across the world due rising inflation impacted by government debt and recent pandemic lockdowns.

During a recent excursion to the Auchtercairn development in Gairloch, Wester Ross, Housing Minister Paul McLennan disclosed this funding augmentation. At this location, Communities Housing Trust, in conjunction with Albyn Housing Association and Highland Council, has orchestrated the realization of a diverse array of 25 reasonably priced dwellings, in addition to shops, a café, a tourism center, and spaces dedicated to education, communal activities, and commercial operations.

Functioning as benevolent entities, Community Housing Trusts are tasked with involving local communities in advocating, bolstering, and advancing endeavors geared towards affordable housing.

This allocation of funds aligns with a commitment outlined in the Bute House Agreement, aimed at ensuring that community housing trusts receive the requisite financial backing to effectively contribute to the implementation of residential projects in rural areas.

According to Housing Minister Paul McLennan, the Community housing trusts have a vital function in facilitating the provision of economical residences in remote and island locales. This particular development serves as a notable illustration of how community-driven entities can construct dwellings that cater to the requirements of the local populace.

“Good quality housing is essential to attract and retain people in remote, rural and island communities and the Scottish Government has committed to delivering 110,000 affordable homes by 2032 – with at least 10% in remote, rural and island areas.”
