A pivotal moment in bilateral agreements!

Maldives (Commonwealth Union)_ Major agreements have been exchanged between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, marking a pivotal moment in their bilateral relations. The exchange took place during the fourth session of the Maldives-Sri Lanka Joint Commission, which Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid attended as part of his official visit to Sri Lanka. Accordingly, the signing ceremony was attended by FM Shahid and his Sri Lankan counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs M.U.M. Ali Sabry, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

The first agreement signed was a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Establishment of the Maldives Cultural Centre in Sri Lanka. Accordingly, High Commissioner of the Maldives to Sri Lanka Ali Faiz represented the Maldivian government and signed the agreement, while Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious, and Cultural Affairs of Sri Lanka Somarathne Vidanapathirana represented the Sri Lankan side and signed the MoU. The objective of this agreement is to strengthen, promote, and develop cultural cooperation between the two nations.

The other key agreement signed during the ceremony was an MoU on Health Cooperation. This MoU is expected to enhance collaboration between the Maldives and Sri Lanka in the field of healthcare. Accordingly, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Health Shamau Shareef signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldivian government, while Additional Secretary (Medical Services) to the Ministry of Health of Sri Lanka Dr. A.K. Sunil Bernard De Alwis signed on behalf of the Sri Lankan government. According to FM Shahid, providing quality healthcare services is a major priority for the Maldivian government.

The third MoU, named the MoU on ‘Cultural Cooperation between the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Government of the Republic of Maldives’, was signed by Minister of State for Arts, Culture, and Heritage Mohamed Thoriq and Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious, and Cultural Affairs of Sri Lanka Somarathne Vidanapathirana. This agreement creates an opportunity for both countries to foster stronger cultural relations and promote cooperation in heritage conservation, preservation, and archaeology.

Overall, the agreements exchanged between the Maldives and Sri Lanka aim to strengthen bilateral relations and promote cooperation in the areas of cultural exchange, healthcare, and people-to-people interactions. These significant steps forward demonstrate the commitment of both nations to fostering closer ties and mutual growth.
