Crucial role of Nigerian Diaspora

-

Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ In a dynamic exchange of ideas at the Nigeria-Canada trade summit held in Lagos, Professor Pat Utomi illuminated the entrepreneurial potential of the Nigerian diaspora in shaping the trajectory of the nation’s development. Against the backdrop of Nigeria’s paradoxical status as a resource-rich yet economically challenged nation, Utomi underscored the pivotal role diaspora Nigerians play in effecting meaningful change.

Central to Utomi’s address was the recognition of the Nigerian diaspora’s wealth of human capital and entrepreneurial acumen. Despite residing in disparate corners of the globe, Nigerians both at home and abroad possess a unique duality, straddling two worlds with the potential to bridge developmental gaps. Drawing parallels with the success stories of nations like Japan, India, and China, Utomi highlighted the historical significance of diaspora communities in propelling their respective countries towards prosperity.

Crucially, Utomi emphasized that Nigeria’s salvation lies not solely in its abundant natural resources but in the values and institutions upheld by its diaspora. Contrasting the pervasive corruption and societal decay within Nigeria, Utomi pointed to the diaspora’s embodiment of different values, particularly in nations like Canada and the United States, which could serve as catalysts for societal renewal and economic growth back home.

Echoing Utomi’s sentiments, other speakers at the summit delved into themes of sustainability, transgenerational wealth creation, and the imperative of representation in decision-making processes. Canadian immigration consultant Mehal Singh provided valuable insights into the entrepreneurial landscape in Canada, urging aspiring entrepreneurs to persevere in their pursuits while navigating new markets.

However, concerns were raised by co-convener Dr. Sunday Olorunsheyi regarding the inclination of African migrants towards employment rather than entrepreneurship in Canada. Dr. Olorunsheyi stressed the importance of fostering economic empowerment through business ownership, highlighting the need for strategic initiatives to support and incentivize entrepreneurial endeavors within the diaspora community.

In alignment with this vision, co-convener Mr. Babajide Shiwoku outlined Glocapro’s mission to empower African businesses in Canada, recognizing the burgeoning Afro-Caribbean population as a promising market for growth and collaboration.

Moderated by TV host Mrs. Tope Mark-Odigie, the summit served as a convergence point for influential stakeholders across diverse sectors, fostering dialogue and collaboration towards shared economic objectives. The event culminated in concrete plans to host a Canadian iteration of the trade summit by Glocapro, aimed at deepening economic ties and facilitating greater synergy between Nigeria and Canada.

In essence, the Nigeria-Canada trade summit provided a platform for thought leaders to reaffirm the invaluable contributions of the Nigerian diaspora in driving sustainable development and economic prosperity. Through harnessing the collective talents, resources, and innovative spirit of its diaspora, Nigeria stands poised to chart a course towards a brighter and more prosperous future.
