India (Commonwealth Union)_ Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian commercial pilot, has emerged as an international symbol of courage after a terrifying incident aboard a Flydubai flight turned him into an overnight hero. What began as a routine journey from Dubai to Tel Aviv became a fight for survival when a violent struggle broke out inside the cockpit. Machchhar, who was commanding Flydubai Flight FZ1073, was reportedly attacked and stabbed by his co-pilot during the flight. Despite his injuries, he continued fighting to prevent the aircraft from being deliberately crashed. His actions, followed by the intervention of passengers and other pilots on board, helped bring the crisis under control. The incident has since attracted praise from leaders in India, Israel, the United States and other countries. Additionally, awards, financial recognition and a special invitation from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have followed, turning the Indian pilot into a global figure of bravery.

Who is Smit Machchhar?

Captain Smit Machchhar is an experienced Indian aviator from Gujarath who has spent more than a decade flying Boeing 737 aircraft. Before joining Flydubai, he worked with SpiceJet for around 11 years and rose to the position of senior commander. He joined Flydubai in June 2022 as a direct-entry captain. He has accumulated nearly 9,750 flying hours, including more than 6,400 hours as pilot-in-command. His professional experience also includes training and assessing other pilots.

Machchhar studied business administration at the Welingkar Institute of Management. Aviation was not his original career choice. After school, he initially considered a textile engineering course connected with his family business. However, an aviation seminar he attended at the age of 19 changed his plans. He later decided to pursue flying and underwent training in New Zealand. In an earlier podcast interview, Machchhar recalled that his training cost his family around Rs 16 lakh to Rs 17 lakh. His mother was initially worried about his decision, while his father accepted it more calmly.

What happened on the Flydubai flight?

Flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai International Airport to Tel Aviv when the situation inside the cockpit suddenly became dangerous. According to accounts that emerged after the incident, an argument between the pilots turned violent. Machchhar was attacked and stabbed by his co-pilot, who was accused of attempting to take control of the aircraft and crash it. The aircraft reportedly lost a significant amount of altitude during the struggle, plunging from around 34,000 feet to below 17,000 feet. The flight also transmitted emergency signals, including the international distress code 7700 and, briefly, the hijacking code 7500.

Machchhar’s response proved critical. Despite being seriously injured, he continued resisting the attack. He eventually managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers to enter and help restrain the other pilot. Two pilots travelling as passengers then assisted in taking control of the aircraft. The plane was diverted and eventually made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. The suspected attacker was taken into custody by Saudi authorities. What could have become one of the world’s worst aviation disasters was therefore brought under control.

The terrifying moment Machchhar fought back

The most remarkable part of the incident was Machchhar’s determination after being injured. In a later conversation, the captain explained that he was fighting for his own life but quickly realised that the aircraft was going down. Lying injured on the cockpit floor, he understood that he had to make one final effort. He pushed himself up and reached the cockpit door. Opening it gave the passengers an opportunity to enter and intervene. Machchhar later told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he had been in severe pain but knew he had to act. He also recalled reciting the Hanuman Chalisa during those critical moments, saying that his faith helped him endure the pain and find the strength to continue. His narration clearly conveyed the tense situation inside the cockpit that could otherwise have been described simply as an aviation emergency. For Machchhar, it was a personal battle for survival that became a desperate effort to protect everyone aboard.

Netanyahu hails the Indian pilot

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was among the first world leaders to publicly praise Machchhar. Netanyahu described the Indian captain’s actions as extraordinary bravery and said his resistance helped prevent a catastrophic disaster. He later spoke directly with Machchhar and called him a hero not only of India and Israel but of the wider world. The praise carried special significance because most of the passengers were reportedly Israeli citizens. Their safety depended on the actions taken during the cockpit struggle. The incident also attracted attention because of the potential consequences of a successful attack. With a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight carrying a large number of Israeli passengers, a deliberate crash could have triggered an international crisis and heightened tensions between countries.

Modi and Trump praise Machchhar

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised Machchhar, calling him a hero who displayed immense courage despite suffering serious injuries. Modi said the captain’s bravery and determination helped save lives and prevent a major tragedy. The prime minister later spoke to Machchhar while he was recovering and heard directly about the captain’s experience inside the cockpit. Former US President Donald Trump also praised Machchhar, describing him as a hero. Trump noted that the pilot was in serious condition but still had the presence of mind to act during an extremely dangerous situation. The praise from leaders across different countries quickly transformed Machchhar from a relatively unknown commercial pilot into an internationally recognised figure.

Machchhar’s health and recovery

Machchhar was initially treated at a hospital in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after suffering injuries during the attack. Indian diplomatic officials said his condition was stable and that they were closely monitoring his treatment while remaining in contact with his family. He was later moved to the UAE for further treatment, where his family joined him. An earlier interview also resurfaced after the incident. In that conversation, Machchhar had spoken about the importance of cabin crew during emergencies and the training they receive to protect passengers. Those remarks took on new meaning after the Flydubai incident. Passengers played a crucial role in entering the cockpit and helping control the situation after Machchhar opened the door.

Gujarat announces bravery award

The Gujarat government announced that Machchhar would receive the Visisht Gujarat Garima Award in recognition of his courage. The state government described his actions as an extraordinary example of bravery and humanity. The announcement came as people across Gujarat and other parts of India expressed concern for his recovery. A special prayer was also organised at the Somnath temple for his health and long life. The temple conducted prayers and Mahamrityunjaya Mantra Japa as people sought his speedy recovery.

A Rs 1 Crore reward for Machchhar’s bravery

Machchhar’s bravery has also brought financial recognition. Mankind Pharma announced a reward of Rs 1 crore for the captain, describing it as a tribute to his courage, presence of mind and commitment to passenger safety. The reward highlighted the extraordinary circumstances in which Machchhar acted. He was not simply dealing with a technical problem or routine emergency. He was injured during an apparent struggle inside the cockpit while the aircraft itself was losing altitude. His decision to keep fighting despite his injuries became the defining moment of the incident.

Israel offers a special honour

Israel has also indicated that Machchhar could receive a special honour. Netanyahu invited the Indian captain to join him and Prime Minister Modi in lighting a ceremonial torch at Israel’s next Independence Day celebrations. The invitation was particularly significant because the honour is generally associated with Israeli citizens. Netanyahu told Machchhar that Israelis would welcome his participation and described him as a hero of India, Israel and the entire world. Israel has also announced plans to honour Israeli passengers who helped overpower the co-pilot and prevent the aircraft from being crashed.

From pilot to global hero

Captain Smit Machchhar began the journey as a commercial pilot responsible for safely flying passengers between two cities. Within minutes, his role changed completely. Faced with a violent attack, serious injuries and an aircraft plunging thousands of feet, he made the decision to keep fighting. His actions gave passengers a chance to intervene and helped prevent a disaster. The story has resonated around the world because it goes beyond aviation. It is about courage under unimaginable pressure and the responsibility of one person to protect hundreds of others.

Machchhar has received praise from political leaders, a state bravery award, a Rs 1 crore reward and an invitation to an important Israeli national ceremony. Yet the recognition is ultimately rooted in one decision made high above the ground: when he was badly injured and could have given up, he chose to get back up. That decision may have saved hundreds of lives and prevented a tragedy with consequences far beyond the aircraft itself. For many, that is what transformed Captain Smit Machchhar from an Indian pilot into an overnight international hero.
