South Africa: Allowing Children to Be…

Africa ( commonwealth union ) _ Child Protection Week, observed from 29 May to 5 June in South Africa, aims to focus on the rights of children as outlined in the Constitution and the Children’s Act. The campaign aims to ensure the safety, well-being, and rights of children, fostering a safer environment for them. In this context, it is important for children to not only feel physically safe but also emotionally safe, which includes having a safe space to discuss gender-related issues.

During workshops on sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) in Vrededorp, Johannesburg, teenagers expressed discomfort in discussing gender identity with their parents and teachers. Gender identity and expression can be complex, and for some young people, it is not fixed but can change daily. The concept of gender fluidity allows individuals, particularly teenagers, to take their identity and expression one day at a time, rather than being confined to a single gender label.

The term ‘gender fluidity’ describes the way some teenagers feel they fit outside the traditional gender binary. It acknowledges that gender can be flexible and de-emphasizes the need to align with a specific gender. This understanding of gender identity has been liberating for many individuals, helping them better understand themselves and live authentically.

However, there are still challenges faced by children exploring their gender identity. Peers may struggle to comprehend and ask invasive questions, contributing to a lack of understanding and acceptance. These challenges extend beyond childhood, as societal stigma and discrimination make it difficult for trans teens and adults to access healthcare services.

It is crucial for parents, teachers, and healthcare workers to educate themselves and understand the changing language and experiences surrounding gender. The complexities around gender are not limited to young people but impact everyone and have implications for the public health system. Cultural awareness and support for the LGBTQI+ community can contribute to a more inclusive and supportive society.

The right to choose one’s sex or gender identity is a fundamental aspect of self-determination, dignity, and freedom, protected by the Constitution and supported by the courts in South Africa. During Child Protection Week, it is important for parents, teachers, and society as a whole to reflect on these rights and work towards their realization for all children.
