Sunak fights shoplifting

-

Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced stringent measures to tackle retail crime and safeguard UK high streets, particularly targeting serial or abusive shoplifters.

Under the new regulations, assaulting a retail worker will be categorized as a distinct criminal offense, emphasizing the firm stance against such unacceptable behavior.

Offenders could potentially face imprisonment for up to six months, along with an unlimited fine and a prohibition from revisiting the establishment where the offense occurred. Criminal Behaviour Orders may also restrict them from entering specific premises, with a breach of such orders carrying a maximum prison sentence of five years. In severe cases, such as those involving serious bodily harm with intent, perpetrators may even receive a life sentence.

This initiative stems from persistent advocacy by Matt Vickers MP and major retailers, urging for enhanced measures to ensure the safety of their staff.

Across the world shop attendants often face intimidations by armed robbers. Such incidents are even more frequent in shops operating on late nights when there are less people around. Shop attendants have often pointed out their vulnerabilities faced while conducting their duties.

The government is intensifying efforts to crack down on recurrent offenders who consistently prey on the nation’s main shopping districts. Serial offenders will now be required to wear electronic tags to monitor where they move around.

According to the government these tags will serve as a persistent physical reminder to offenders that the Probation Service has the capability to track their whereabouts and activities, and that disobedience could result in imprisonment. As per an adjustment to the Criminal Justice Bill, individuals found guilty of assaulting staff thrice or convicted of shoplifting on three distinct occasions will be mandated to wear a tag as a component of any community order.

“I am sending a message to those criminals – whether they are serious organised criminal gangs, repeat offenders or opportunistic thieves – who think they can get away with stealing from these local businesses or abusing shop workers, enough is enough,” said PM Sunak.
