The human cost behind this one stop online shop

(Commonwealth Union) – If there is one that is appreciated by most people who don’t have time to go shopping or simply don’t want to go shopping is the beauty of online shopping. A lot of brands have seen that there is massive market out there on the internet who would buy their clothes and accessories if it were just a little bit more accessible. This is how online shopping came to be about.

There are major fashions companies such as Asos, Fashion Nova, HnM who are all a part of this online shopping platform. However, today we speak of one of the most popular websites that you can purchase from in any part of the world you live in and that is Shein. Now Shein has a major internet present globally and their clothes and other products are cheaper than most retail stores.

Shein caters to a vast audience but majority being the younger. They are a one stop online shop for most of a young person’s need. Although they cater more to women than they do men they still have a pretty impressive men’s collection. While Shein sells us pretty shiny clothes and accessories for almost nothing, today we find out that there is evidence of the human cost to keep this business model running.

Like many prominent clothing brands, Shein too has outsourced its factories to countries where labour is cheap. However, what does cheap really mean? In the case of Shein, it means 18-hour work days with no weekends and only one-off day a month. The workers had told the media that they don’t get Sundays off either and that they can choose one day of the month to take as a holiday and that is it.

When interviewed, the factory workers were also asked if they are paid well for these hours and the amount of clothes they produce per person. The answer yet again was not positive. The workers stated that they get paid about 560 USD a month and they are expected to produce about 500 pieces of clothing a day.
