What would be the result if one of the most advanced cloud networks in the world were to experience a disaster caused by an act of war, rather than a technical malfunction?
This was the case for the users of Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Bahrain, when, on September 15th, 2026, the company declared that it is unable to restore its services after many months of efforts to do so. The problems began on March 2nd, when AWS reported that a nearby drone attack had struck one of its installations in Bahrain, causing physical damage to AWS’s networks. According to AWS, the explosions that occurred in Bahrain and UAE CRTCA caused serious damage, resulting in power outages and fire-extinguishing systems being triggered due to water damage caused by the fire-extinguishing systems.
Initially, the disruption in Bahrain seemed to be a terrible but manageable outage. They started advising their clients to back up their important data and move their work elsewhere. But things turned out to be worse when AWS announced on April 30, 2026, that the Bahrain region was going to be down indefinitely. During this moment, AWS specifically advised their clients that normal business operations could take months to resume, and they will have to restore their important files from backup copies stored elsewhere.
Now, six months after attacks in March, AWS has provided the worst piece of news yet: Multiple availability zones sustained damage beyond what it had anticipated and prepared for. After trying to restore the infrastructure and recovering everything possible, AWS announced it could not recover data and resources exclusively located in Bahrain.
For organisations, the difference between “offline” and “irretrievable” can be quite large. Those clients who had backups or managed to shift workloads to other AWS geographic regions found that they were able to reconstruct their businesses at different locations. The situation with those who depended solely on resources located in Bahrain was much worse.
This event shows a lesser-known shortcoming of the cloud: the data replication method has limitations if a natural disaster affects various levels of infrastructure simultaneously.
AWS assures that it will continue to aid customers from Bahrain and provide further information by the beginning of 2027.
Thus, Bahrain’s cloud disaster is more than just a long-term technology failure. It proves that even information that is produced to live in a very secure digital environment is list dependent on physical buildings that may also be affected by real-life conflicts.
