Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – The benefits of music have long been appreciated, however in recent times more scientist haven taken note. Many elders’ homes across the world, have noticed significant benefits of incorporating musical sessions with singing and playing instruments. In recent times many researchers have made it a key area of focus.

Rebecca Thomas is a final year MA Music Therapy student from the University of South Wales (USW), who was engaged in a work placement at Capel Grange nursing home in Newport situated in the northeast of Cardiff.

When she presented recently at the ‘Our Voice, Our Choice, Our City – participatory budgeting voting event’, She didn’t just secure the nursing home’s funding bid, but a person in the audience brought up financial backing for the project.

While engaged with Linc Cymru owned nursing home, Rebecca creates, one-to-one and group, music therapy sessions.

She explained that every session is unique.

“With one group, you could be singing together to increase social interaction, reduce isolation, and to promote a sense of connection between residents and staff.”

“Another session could be specifically designed to stimulate and discuss memories by listening to and playing live music through the ages or different genres. There really are lots of ways that, playing or listening to, music can benefit wellbeing.”

Rebecca a musician her entire life but feels strongly in regards to applying her skills, together with her therapeutic knowledge, in assisting people.

Capel Grange Nursing Home secured funding, not just for new instruments but additional clinical supervision as well, for future students engaging with residents, which is beneficial for the students, the residents along with their families, and also nursing home staff.

They were further invited from another organization to bid for more funds as they were impressed by the therapeutic activities and the difference the work placements were making.

Karen Jeffreys, Community Engagement Manager at Linc Cymru, stated that Rebecca showed them the impact the psychological clinical intervention was capable of and it took just 30 seconds for the entire audience top get animated, showing that if music therapy was impacting all.
